February Cocktail of the Month: Paloma

February Cocktail of the Month: Paloma

A monthly cocktail recipe from your Tizz & Tonic Team

Since we are cocktail enthusiasts (enjoying responsibly of course and never at the sewing machines) and have our studio located in an old cocktail lounge we thought it would be very fitting to share with you some of our go-to-cocktails. Some of these we particularly love to enjoy after a long day of undie making.

So, every month we will bring you a simple, enjoyable recipe. It’s a great way to discover new and old style cocktails and diversify your mental library of drinks. This will surely come in handy next time you're stirring up something delicious for your favourite people. We try to keep each cocktail selection basic since most home bars are not going to have all the necessary ingredients. And because we are just the right amount of fancy.

Cocktail Of the Month: Paloma

Sweet & sour it’s cocktail hour! Februarys Cocktail of the Month is the Paloma.  If you are feeling rosy and a little sweet, or sour and perhaps a bit bitter (or maybe a mix of the two) then this cocktail is for you. We found it suitable to the month of February - the month of love…or not.

At any rate, however you may be feeling, bubbles are involved and bubbles are always fun.

We actually picked this cocktail not only for it’s dynamic taste but because it has grapefruit in it. Grapefruits not only happen to be one of our favourite fruits but they are also one of our most popular undie prints (which you can find here).

For a bit of background knowledge (because knowledge is sexy) let’s quickly slice open the history of The Grapefruit.

Grapefruits are a citrus hybrid originating in Barbados as an accidental cross between the sweet orange and the pomelo, both of which were introduced from Asia. The original grapefruit was about the size of an orange. It was seedy and very bitter. Now, citrus growers focus on developing the fruit to be larger, more attractive in color, and with fewer seeds. Some grapefruit varieties (like the Pink Grapefruit) are extra sweet with sometimes almost no bitter tinge at all.
This is one type that we especially like. It’s also worth mentioning these little dudes are plump with immune-boosting vitamin C - so just call on the Paloma when you need a daily boost of vitamins. ;)

Key Ingredients

  • 2 parts freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
  • ½ part freshly squeezed lime juice
  • ¼ part ( or to taste) agave nectar or simple syrup
  • 2 parts tequila
  • 2 parts sparkling water
  • Ice
  • Citrus wedges for garnish
  • Coarse sea salt, for the rim of the glasses

How to Prepare

Salt the rim of the glass by rubbing a grapefruit wedge around the edge and twirling the rim it onto a small plate of salt for that extra little zing.

Add the tequila, grapefruit juice, sparkling water, lime juice and sweetener together in a highball glass with ice.
Stir to combine.
Then top with sparkling water.

Garnish with a slice of grapefruit or lime or both.

Sip and enjoy. You'll be entirely grapeful you did.
